"Queendom" a documentary about a Russian oppositional drag queen will be screened in Tallinn

On October 30, the film "Queendom" will be shown by Q-Space in the cinema hall Artis in Tallinn. The documentary focuses on the oppositional artist Jenna Marvin, followed by a Q&A with producer Igor Myakotin.

The documentary, directed by Agniia Galdanova, has garnered significant attention worldwide, from South Korea to the USA. It has received numerous awards at prestigious film festivals and is a contender for an Oscar nomination.

"Queendom" presents an emotional portrait of a rebellious queer artist amidst protests and war. The protagonist, Jenna Marvin, stages radical performances in Russia to challenge societal perceptions of beauty and gender and to protest against Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Jenna Marvin grew up in Magadan, where she fearlessly took to the streets in queer costumes. Her towering heels and vibrant outfits made from recycled materials serve not only as self-expression but also as a challenge to a society that needs to rethink its notions of beauty and gender norms. Jenna’s performances have become a new form of art and activism, but her life remains in danger.

"I love the idea that people can experience different emotions looking at my art - ranging from anger and fear to joy," Jenna says.

We invite you to see this film on October 30 at 7:00 PM at Artis, followed by a conversation with producer Igor Myakoti, one of the film's creators.

Igor Myakotin is an Emmy-nominated, BAFTA-winning filmmaker and producer. Among his works is "Welcome to Chechnya," which highlights crimes against LGBTQ individuals in Chechnya.

Igor was a 2022 Sundance Production Fellow and named one of DOC NYC's "40 Under 40" in the documentary industry. He has previously directed two award-winning short films and received the Davis Peace and Diplomacy grant at the International House in New York. Igor is a member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and a graduate of NextDoc.

The film will be screened in Russian with Estonian and English subtitles, and the discussion with Igor will be in English.
